Ash-Shams

Basmala, before verse 1: بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. Verse 1:

   وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا1

   By the sun and its brightness

   Report an error, Verse 1
2. Verse 2:

   وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا2

   And [by] the moon when it follows it

   Report an error, Verse 2
3. Verse 3:

   وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا3

   And [by] the day when it displays it^{note 1931}

   Notes, Verse 3

   [1931] The earth. Also interpreted as the sun. The same applies to the following verse.

4. Verse 4:

   وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا4

   And [by] the night when it covers [i.e., conceals] it

   Report an error, Verse 4
5. Verse 5:

   وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا5

   And [by] the sky and He who constructed it

   Report an error, Verse 5
6. Verse 6:

   وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا6

   And [by] the earth and He who spread it

   Report an error, Verse 6
7. Verse 7:

   وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا7

   And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it^{note 1932}

   Notes, Verse 7

   [1932] i.e., balanced and refined it, creating in it sound tendencies and consciousness.

8. Verse 8:

   فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا8

   And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,

   Report an error, Verse 8
9. Verse 9:

   قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا9

   He has succeeded who purifies it,

   Report an error, Verse 9
10. Verse 10:

    وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا10

    And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].

    Report an error, Verse 10
11. Verse 11:

    كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ11

    Thamūd denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,

    Report an error, Verse 11
12. Verse 12:

    إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا12

    When the most wretched of them was sent forth.^{note 1933}

    Notes, Verse 12

    [1933] To hamstring the she-camel which had been sent by Allāh as a sign to them.

13. Verse 13:

    فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَـٰهَا13

    And the messenger of Allāh [i.e., Ṣāliḥ] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allāh or [prevent her from] her drink."

14. Verse 14:

    فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا14

    But they denied him and hamstrung^{note 1934} her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].

    [1934] And then killed.

15. Verse 15:

    وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَـٰهَا15

    And He does not fear the consequence thereof.^{note 1935}

    [1935] Allāh is not asked about what He does, but His servants will be asked. See 21:23.
