Sources and licences

The Quran text, its translations and the hadith are fetched from their sources by a script and stored byte for byte, each with the address it came from and a SHA-256 hash. A hadith carries the grade its source gives or, for Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the collection. The stored bytes are checked against their hashes on every change to the site, and the sources are asked weekly whether anything changed. This page names each source, the licence it is used under, and the hash of every quoted text, so anyone can check them.

Used for
The hadith in the sample answer on the home page: its Arabic text and its English translation. Its grade is stored and checked; for a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim the page shows the collection instead.

Selected hadith, with their English translations and grades, are taken unchanged from HadeethEnc.com. Its API gives no version number, so each text below carries the date it was fetched. As of 26 October 2026, its published downloads were Arabic version 1.8.0 and English version 1.25.0.

The sample hadith (Sahih Muslim 2999) was first quoted in the English published on sunnah.com, Abdul Hamid Siddiqui's translation. It now comes from HadeethEnc.com; the Corrections section records the change. sunnah.com is the planned source for the hadith library once an API key and written permission are on file.

The basmala

The Quran text stores the basmala at the start of the first verse of every surah except Al-Fatihah, where it is the first verse, and At-Tawbah, which has none. The reader shows it on its own line above verse 1, without a number. The stored text and its hash are unchanged.

Verify it yourself

Download the file at the source address shown for a text. For a Quran verse, find the line that starts with the part of the file shown (for example 2|153|) and take everything after the second |, without the line break. For a translation, read the JSON and take the translation field of that verse. For a hadith or its grade, read the JSON and take the whole field shown (hadeeth for the text, grade for the grade). Compute the SHA-256 of those exact bytes, encoded as UTF-8: it matches the hash shown here. If it does not, the text has changed somewhere, and we want to know.
