Basmala, before verse 1: بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. Verse 1:

   أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْفِيلِ1

   Have you not considered, [O Muḥammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?^{note 1992}

   Notes, Verse 1

   [1992] i.e., the army under the command of Abrahah al-Ashram which was accompanied by a huge elephant and came with the intention of destroying the Kaʿbah at Makkah.

2. Verse 2:

   أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِى تَضْلِيلٍ2

   Did He not make their plan into misguidance?^{note 1993}

   [1993] Causing them to perish.

3. Verse 3:

   وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ3

   And He sent against them birds in flocks,

4. Verse 4:

   تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ4

   Striking them with stones of hard clay,

5. Verse 5:

   فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍۭ5

   And He made them like eaten straw.^{note 1994}

   Notes, Verse 5

   [1994] i.e., husks which have been chewed by cattle. This event took place in the year of the Prophet's birth.
